Today marks the beginning of Wayeb, the five unnamed days at the end of the Mayan Calender, a time to go within and reflect before the year truly kicks off. #guatemala #Wayeb #thefullestandweirdestsend
This is Ekhlas. She is a Yazidi Christian from Sinjar, Iraq. In 2014, when she was 14 years old, ISIS came into her village and abducted her, along with hundreds of other women and girls, into sex slavery. On the same day, she lost 8 of her brothers and her father in a mass execution. In captivity she was subjected to daily beatings, violent rape and humiliation. For six months, she was continuously bought and sold to different monsters of the Islamic State. She tried to escape 3 separate times. She was caught and was physically tortured by foreign fighters at every attempt. She never gave up. At 15 she successfully escaped the hands of ISIS. She now lives and studies in Germany and as long as she is breathing she will fight for the Yazidi people so we never forget that the Yazidi genocide continues. She tells her story and retells her story and every time the anger wells a little bit more but she keeps telling her story. Abduction. Torture. Mass Graves. Monsters. Ekhlas is the most courageous young woman I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. She has a loud laugh, a beautiful voice, and she dreams big for women, Yazidis, and the world at large. She is a forceful reminder of the human spiritโ€™s will to survive even in the grips of the most insidious evil. #yazidigenocide #Sinjar
